Car and Van Rental in Menorca

Menorca, along with its neighbours Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, is one of the Spanish Balearic islands in the Mediterranean. The island is well known for its stunning natural landscapes, megalithic ruins and luxury hotels. The unspoiled landscapes and ongoing preservation projects have earned it a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation.

The historic capital of the island is the Ciutadella de Menorca in the west, with the main airport near Mahon in the far south east. If you want to take advantage of the island's natural beauty and stunning beaches, hiring a car is your best option.

The Enterprise Rent-A-Car branch is at the Aeroport de Menorca, close to Sant Climent on the Me-12 island highway, so you can pick up a car on arrival and get straight on the road to explore.

The airport is about 45 kms from the historic city of Ciutadella de Menorca, which is on the west coast of the island. Discover Menorca

There is plenty to see and do in Menorca, including visiting the two capital cities of the island. Mahon is the more modern capital, with one of the largest natural harbours in the world and ferries running to Barcelona and Valencia on the mainland. Ciutadella is the old capital, known for its historic buildings, narrow streets, and unusual long, thin port.

Menorca has several remarkably well-preserved prehistoric sites, including the Naveta des Tudons a megalithic chamber tomb and the Bronze age village of Torre d'en Galmés. You’ll find the best views when you drive up Monte Toro, the highest point on the island with panoramic views of Menorca. As well as the view, you’ll find a church and a bar/restaurant at the top.

Menorca's Beautiful Beaches

Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta and Cala Mitjana are sheltered coves with sandy beaches within a few minutes’ drive of each other on the South coast. Cala Macarella has a beach café with loos and a shower, making it a very popular place to spend the entire day. Menorca. If you’re up for a little hike to a natural unspoilt beach, visit Cala Mitjana - a 20 min walk through an uneven pine forest from the car park but the spectacular beach is well worth the walk. If you’d rather park next to the beach, Son Bou is the longest beach on the island and one of the most accessible with facilities near by.

On the other side of the island, in the north, Cala Pregonda is a stunning beach though, once again, with a long walk from the car park so not ideal for small children or people with mobility issues. About 20 minutes away, Fornells beach is much more accessible and, with the town nearby, there are plenty of restaurant options so you can have a break from the sun.

Family-Friendly Menorca

Menorca has no shortage of stunning beaches but, due to the rocky terrain making access difficult, not all the beaches are suitable for small children or older people. The most accessible beaches are Son Bou, Cala en Porter, Cala Galdana, and Santo Tomas, all of which have nearby parking so you don't have to hike to the beach.

A trip to Menorca zoo will be fun for all the family. There is a mix of indigenous and exotic animals, many of which have come from rescue centres across Europe. It's a charming blend of petting zoo and wildlife park, with a children's play area and a café. Less than 20 minutes' drive away, at the mouth of Mahon harbour, you'll find the Fortress of Isabel II, a remarkably well-preserved 19th Century fortress with fabulous views, canons and dungeons. The fort covers quite a large area, so you may want to rent one of the electic buggies to get around.

Driving in Menorca

In Menorca, as in the rest of Spain, they drive on the right hand side, this is sometimes hard to remember on smaller road and roundabouts, so drive carefully. The roads in Menorca are probably the least busy of the three main islands and have been modernised so are in pretty good shape.

  • Priority rules: As a general rule you give way to the right at intersections. On a roundabout, cars already on the roundabout have priority.
  • Speed limits are slightly lower than in Ireland so watch out for signs.
  • Seatbelts must be worn both in the front and back seats.
  • Children who are shorter than 135 cm (4 feet, 5 inches) must use an approved child seat or harness. If you need one, you can reserve and pay for your child car seat when you are booking your hire car.
  • It's illegal to use a mobile phone when driving, unless you have a hands free system.

Parking

If you park on blue or dotted green lines, you must get a ticket from the machine. Green is generally for residents, but can be used by visitors, as long as they pay and display. Parking is usually free on Sundays and holidays, but check the machine as this varies by town and area.
