Things to do in Limerick City

Limerick is the third biggest city in Ireland, located in Munster on the west coast. The city is built up along the River Shannon with the 13th century King John’s Castle at the centre of the old, medieval town. The castle sits on King’s island and has spectacular views from the tower as well as lots of activities for both adults and children. Another historic building worth a visit on the island, is the 12th Century Cathedral of Saint Mary, built on the site of an ancient palace. Parking in Limerick is not generally a problem and on Sundays it is free throughout the town.

If you fancy a bit of shopping head to the fashion quarter, an area of pedestrian streets just south east of Arthur’s Quay park. You’ll also find the Milk Market is this area, a covered food market where you can eat, or pick up some delicious food to take away.

Trips around Limerick

Limerick City is a great base to explore the Wild Atlantic Way. Follow the river to the coast and then you have the choice of heading south to Kerry and west Cork or north through Clare, Galway, Mayo and Sligo. Either direction will take you along a stunning coastline that will impress whatever the weather. If you want to go off the beaten track a bit, you may want to rent an SUV as some of the more remote roads can be a bit rough, and you’ll also get better views as you’re higher off the ground.

If you’re heading south, don’t miss the Healy Pass, a spectacular road that winds its way through the Kerry mountains, passing lakes and waterfalls with amazing panoramic views. If you decide to go north, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher, but keep small children close as it’s usually pretty windy and the edge is not fenced off, so not good for anyone with a fear of heights. Stop off in Doolin for some trad music, then head on up the coast to Connemara.
